About Cedar Key
Downtown Cedar Key
Cedar Key is a small island community nestled among the many tiny Keys of the Nature Coast of Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico. The town is one of the oldest seaports in the state and today offers a rich history, tranquil lifestyle and an almost forgotten old Florida atmosphere. Here, encircled by the rich and diversified life of the gulf waters, locals and visitors enjoy a charming town that provides the perfect surroundings for a rejuvenating Florida vacation that can't be found in the traditional congested tourist destinations. So if you are looking for Daytona style beaches and businesses, this is probably not for you. Although if you occasionally crave a faster and more structured pace, Crystal River, the Suwannee River, Gainesville and the University of Florida, and Tampa are only 1 to 3 hours drive away.
Cedar Key offers something for everyone. Whether exploring on the water or off, downtown offers boat, bike and kayak rentals, with fishing charters available to help you catch dinner. If you wish to eat out there are a variety of fantastic restaurants that provide fresh local seafood and landlubber dishes, and although everywhere in Cedar Key is casual dress, some of a simple elegance perfect for any special celebration. For afternoon happy hour, or an evening sunset toast, there are bars and taverns with island views, and on occasion, live music. If you are a browser or shopper there are several unique artisan and gift shops, and we recommend a visit to the Art Center for works by local local artists in many different mediums.
This is a famous Cedar Key landmark. You'll see it as you pass the beach on your way toward downtown.
For the hiker there is a small trail on the island of Atsena Otie and several Cedar Key Scrub reserve trails just a few miles inland. And if you are a star gazer, you would be interested to know that this is a favorite destination for the area astronomy clubs due to the natural remoteness of Cedar Key. At Cedar Key Haven, you too will enjoy a brilliant view of the night sky long after the glorious sunsets fade away.
Some of the favored ways to explore Cedar Key are by bicycle, walking, and golf carts, since the collective size of downtown and the pier encompass approximately one-half hour in walking shoes. Althought this is a small town there is a nicely stocked local grocer, banks and ATM machine, several churches, a liquor store, hardware store, seafood store, vegetable stand, auto parts store, post office, marina, and gas station with a convenience store.
